Citations

Citing is important because it grants credit to the people whose creativity and discovery have enhanced the writing we have created. Citations also give our blog some credibility as it shows we have done research and built upon valid arguments. We want you to know that we have not just made our information up. Hopefully, if our posts are interesting enough, the citations will also allow you to research the topics further on your own, as we give you some sources to start your exploration.

To cite our sources, we will provide a hyperlink to the original source in our post when credit is due. As not all of our sources allow for a direct hyperlink, we will use MLA style when the hyperlink is not available. With MLA, we will provide a parenthetical citation in the post which corresponds to the full citation at the bottom of the post. All sources used in a post, hyperlinked or used with MLA, will be referenced at the bottom of our posts. We decided to have two citation styles - hyperlinks and the MLA format for credibility, since we post a wide array of information - we don’t really have a set area that we think we’d like to work on, hence the term Undecided. The MLA format would allow us to cite sources towards the humanities and liberal arts categories. On the other hand, the hyperlinks allow for easy access to our web sources.

Intro Post

Through this blog, The Undecided, four undecided first-years seek to provide a variety of input from a diverse set of students with experiences so different that it allows a refreshing perspective on many subjects – from scientific knowledge, controversy, and evidence, to the artistic topic of opinionated humanities. Our blog members include Samantha Ty, Maggie Dodson, Gage Tillotson, and Alex Waddell, fellow students, who just like you have trouble getting up in the mornings and complain about homework. We hope to aim the message to a local younger crowd of high school and college-aged individuals to pique whatever interests they may have. The local Triangle area, a bustling research community, would be well-informed of the sciences, but we would divert the attention from the uncommon science terms like the chemical disposition of uranium, to a relaxed, concise overview that is easy to understand (with pictures!)

Though we cannot promise that you will like the wide array of the subject matter, we promise that we will speak with an honest voice that you will hopefully enjoy. We are interested in being knowledgeable and gaining information to shape our perspectives. As college students, we are experienced in academic work and have delved into bits of research. We have dealt with writing research papers throughout our tenure in high school. As with all undecided students, we have the widest array of interests that a group could possibly get, and we dedicate this blog to focusing and uniting in our indecisiveness. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Samantha Ty is from Fayetteville, NC but was raised in Manila, Philippines for the first ten years of her life. An accomplished violinist in high school, she also wrote a few articles for the school newspaper and proofread yearbook spreads, gaining her status as a writer along with having journals while growing up. Though feeling uncertain about college majors; therefore, an undecided major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she is interested in the arts and public health. Her hobbies include reading, listening to and playing music, traveling back to her homeland (and other places), going to amusement parks and beaches, and being with friends. Her work has been featured in a poetry collection for middle school students in 2007. Although she enjoys watching sports, she has an athleticism comparable to stale bread. You can send her a message at smgty@live.unc.edu about anything, and you get bonus points if you talk about your love of coffee-related things.
Alex Waddell is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is from Danville, Virginia. He is relatively lost as far as what he wants to major in or what to do with his life in general. This blog is his attempt to figure it all out. At the moment, his interest is primarily focused on the public health field. His goal in writing for this blog is to show how awesome a place Chapel Hill. Right now dedicating his life to civil and social services seems ideal, but he worries it is too idyllic. He hopes this blog will convince you (and most importantly himself) otherwise. He writes for the Daily Tar Heel newspaper in Chapel Hill, reporting on Chapel Hill’s daily comings and goings. In his free time he enjoys consuming obscene amounts of basketball, obsessively analyzing the unending futility of his beloved Charlotte Bobcats. He believes in loyalty, integrity and golden double stuffed Oreo’s. You can send him Oreo’s, talk about how bad the Bobcats are (and forever will be), and tell him how to live his life at alexawad@live.unc.edu.
Maggie Dodson is from Mountain Brook, Alabama. She is an avid Alabama football fan and loves Carolina basketball, even though it has been a less than stellar year for both. She is currently very Undecided at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill but continues to love animals and anything outside. She is fascinated by languages and traveling the world and likes art, although she does not have a particularly impressive talent for creating or surveying it. She is also a passionate eater, and she hopes her writing will incorporate some, if not all, of these interests. She is notoriously unreliable at answering texts but looks forward to any emails at pmdodson@live.unc.edu.
Gage Tillotson is a first-year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Gage grew up in Wilmington North Carolina and has been a Tar Heel supporter his whole life. Gage is undecided in his major but is interested in history, sports, and many other topics. Gage’s hobbies include playing sports, hanging out with friends, and watching pretty much any and all sports. Gage mainly enjoys spending time with his friends, especially on the weekends. Although Gage is no published author, he still enjoys writing when he is called upon to do so. Gage attempts to relate to his audience through his writing and writes so it is easy for them to understand. Feel free to chat with Gage about anything and everything by sending him an email at Gstillot@live.unc.edu.
